Accept what ya get!

I just came home from a one week vacation on a cruise that went to four wonderful islands in the Caribbean (five if you include the home port of beautiful San Juan).

When we were considering which specific cruise to take we narrowed the list down to four options.  One wanted sunny warm weather and beaches.  The other wanted sightseeing in the Mediterranean (a sailing with a different amazing port every day).

In the end the sunny warm beaches won.  Had it not, we’d have been on the Costa ship that went down off the coast of Italy.

Its not just the big decisions that make a difference.

Beautiful, yes.

I love soccer.  I generally refer to it as futebol and chide my friends (I live in the heart of Jets and Giants territory) that I follow the sport where they actually touch the ball with their feet.  :-)

Anyway, most of you – most everyone – knows the name Pele.  The greatest soccer player of all time with an amazing life story, even more so after becoming “Pele”.  Since the first Pele so many have been the “next” one.  Fact is, there have been some amazing “historical” players, and two of them have been Brasilian as well – Ronoldo and Ronoladinho.  But, there’s also Christiano Ronoldo, and Messi, my goodness, Messi is amazing.

Just my opinion, and as good as the others have been (and they have been amazing), Messi is in a league by himself.  Until very recently.

If you’ve not seen Neymar, or even if you have, this highlight reel is a must.  If you have any appreciation for the sport, watch this young man (born in 1992!).

And please don’t think everyone can play like this.  Watch how he manipulates the ball and the opposing player.  Watch how many defenders he leaves in the dust.  What how he handles the ball with his feet.  Only a few people have ever show the kind of grace of play Neymar has, especially at 19.  There is no doubt he is one of the greatest living players.  THE greatest?  [Shrug} Time will tell, but its going to be an amazing and entertaining ride.

This is why it is called the beautiful sport.

New Year, New Things

I’m pretty satisfied with 2011.  Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t perfect, but for me, it was pretty good.   2012 is going to be even better.  I thought I would dedicate the year to doing things I’ve not done before.  The first of those already happened, I went skiing, more on that in a moment.  The second is to see three islands in the Caribbean I’ve never seen before.  Thats a tough chore since I spent a dozen years or so in the travel industry before coming to higher ed.  In case you’re interested, they are St. Kitts, Aruba, and Curacao.  The 3rd is to complete my candidacy, thats definitely something I’ve never done before.

So, I was visiting family in Vermont for the holiday and my Uncle suggested a skiing lesson, since I was a “never ever”  lol.  My goal for the year was born.  To do as many things I’ve never done before in the next 12 months.  So, here’s proof of the first one – skiing.  I enjoyed a 2 hour lesson and then a run down the beginner hill.  It seemed like Mount Everest when I had the skiis on.  LOL  I had an excellent time and look forward to the next first – to make a ski “run” with out falling down.  (also, learning how to stop better would be good).

Cheers – here’s to an excellent 2012!

Theme

Since moving this blog over to my own domain, I’ve been using the default theme.  I plan to take some time soon (probably this week) to hunt down an appropriate theme, but I was wondering if anyone had a suggestion.  If so, feel free to leave it in Comments.  The theme should match (or reflect, or capture, or…) the content in some way.

Never bullshitta you mama

This comes to us courtesy of my mother (who is Jewish, not Italian, but close enough)

An Italian MaMa

Mrs. Ravioli comes to visit her son Anthony for dinner. He lives with a female roommate, Maria. During the course of the meal, his mother couldn’t help but notice how pretty Anthony’s roommate is.  Over the course of the evening, while watching the two interact, she started to wonder if there was more between Anthony and his roommate than met the eye.

Reading his mom’s thoughts, Anthony volunteered, “I know what you must be thinking, but I assure you, Maria and I are just roommates.”

About a week later, Maria came to Anthony saying,

“Ever since your mother came to dinner, I’ve been unable to find the silver sugar bowl. You don’t suppose she took it, do you?”

“Well, I doubt it, but I’ll email her, just to be sure.

So he sat down and wrote an email:

Dear MaMa,
I’m not saying that you “did” take the sugar bowl from my house ; I’m not saying that you “did not” take it. But the fact remains that it has been missing ever since you were here for dinner.
Your Loving Son Anthony

Several days later, Anthony received a response email from his MaMa which read:

Dear Son,
I’m not saying that you “do” sleep with Maria, and I’m not saying that you “do not” sleep with her. But the fact remains that if she was sleeping in her OWN bed, she would have found the sugar bowl by now.
Your Loving MaMa
